  • The Quashnet River runs south through the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee to the Moonakis River, which flows into Waquoit Bay. The Quashnet is one of four coastal Cape Cod streams with wild populations of sea run brook trout. Since May 1976, Trout Unlimited has been conducting the physical restoration of habitat along the river. Before work was started some sections of the river were sixty to eighty feet wide and only a few inches deep. Electro fishing that took place at that time only produced eight trout, seven of which were stocked brown trout. Currently the estimated wild brook trout population in a 3100 foot section of the stream is three hundred fifty-seven.

Catch and release regulations were established in 1988 and brown trout stocking was discontinued in 1991. More than 26,000 man hours of labor have been invested in the restoration by members and friends of the Cape Cod Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Southeastern Mass. Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Currently, volunteers have been cutting brush from the banks of the river and using it to narrow the stream. In the spring, Trout Unlimited volunteers have planted and will continue to plant native trees to shade out the invasive sweet gale that threatens to choke the river.

The restoration and maintainence of the Quashnet river is an ongoing project and volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Work days are the 3rd Sunday of each month at 9:00 AM unless otherwise noted. Work is supervised under the guidance of Fran Smith and Bob Nickerson. If you are interested in volunteering or contributing to the project call: Bob Nickerson at (508) 428-8320 or Fran Smith at (508)548-2554 We work rain or shine, however if there is a lot of snow or extreme cold, please call Bob Nickerson @ 508 428-8320 to check if we will be working.
